When an automated dashboard is ready to trust
Five checks that turn a convenient report into a dependable operating tool.
Automation saves time only when people trust the result. Start by matching totals against a known source for a fixed period. Then test edge cases: refunds, duplicate events, late-arriving records and timezone boundaries.
Every dashboard should state when it last refreshed, which sources it uses and who owns each important definition. Alerts should identify failed refreshes or unusual volume changes before a stakeholder discovers them in a meeting.
Finally, run the old and new process in parallel for at least one reporting cycle. Record differences and resolve their causes. A signed-off reconciliation provides a far stronger launch point than visual polish alone.
Make it useful in your organisation
Choose one repeated decision and identify the smallest reliable set of measures needed to support it. Document the definitions, nominate an owner and agree when the team will review the result.
